Galaxian is an arcade game released by Namco in 1979. It is considered to be one of the first true shoot ’em up games, and was one of the most popular arcade games of the early 1980s. In the game, the player pilots a spaceship at the bottom of the screen and shoots at swarms of alien space ships that move in formation. The goal is to shoot and destroy all of the aliens before they reach the bottom of the screen. The game also features bonus points for shooting at special aliens that are occasionally released. Galaxian was well-received and spawned several sequels, including Gaplus, Galaga, and Galaga ’88. It has also been ported to numerous home systems, including the Atari 2600 and the Nintendo Entertainment System. Galaxian remains a popular game today and has been included in several compilations of classic arcade games.
